- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Create three wells in the dry ingredients. Pour the warm water into one well, vegetable oil into another, and apple cider vinegar into the third.
- Add the vanilla extract and mix everything together until just combined. Be careful not to overmix—a few small lumps are fine.
- Pour the batter into your prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Don't overmix the batter to avoid developing gluten. Measure flour correctly by spooning into the measuring cup and leveling off. Room temperature ingredients incorporate more evenly. Test for doneness with a toothpick—it should come out with a few moist crumbs.
